DALLAS, Texas (February 8, 2018) – Nasher Sculpture Center announces Nasher Prize Dialogues: Sculpture + History, a panel discussion, presented in partnership with The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas on March 6, 2018 at 7 p.m. There is a wine reception before the talk, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Nasher Prize Dialogues: Sculpture + History will look to the ways in which artists work with documents, found and archived materials, and research to create sculptural work that considers particularly potent historic moments and issues, as well as the current political climate. Taking place in Dallas, a city marked profoundly by the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and racial inequality, Nasher Prize Dialogues: Sculpture + History will consider the complex ways in which sculpture tackles the past. Panelists will include New York-based artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar; artist and educator Paul Ramirez Jonas (New York); artist and recent recipient of the Calder Prize, Jill Magid (New York); and Dallas-based artist lauren woods. The conversation will be moderated by Ben Davis, national art critic for artnet News.
The discussion is part of Nasher Prize Dialogues, the discursive platform of the Nasher Prize, the annual international prize for a living artist in recognition of a body of work that has had an extraordinary impact on the understanding of sculpture. The Dialogues are intended to foster international awareness of sculpture and to stimulate discussion and debate. Programs—including panel discussions, lectures, and symposia—are held in cities around the world on a yearly basis, offering engagement with various audiences, and providing myriad perspectives and insight into the ever-expanding field of sculpture.
Previous international Nasher Prize Dialogues programs include “The Public Place of Sculpture” at Museo Jumex, Mexico City; “The Work of Sculpture in the Age of Digital Production” at the Akademie der Ku¨nste, Berlin; and “Why Sculpture Now?” at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, in partnership with the Henry Moore Foundation.
Upcoming international Nasher Prize Dialogues talks will take place in Glasgow, UK on May 2, in partnership with The Common Guild and Glasgow International Festival for the Visual Arts, and in Reykjavik, Iceland in partnership with the Reykjavik Art Museum in August 2018.
