Graduate students from around the world present scholarly work on a host of questions and topics related to 2022 Nasher Prize Laureate Nairy Baghramian. Moderated by Dr. Catherine Craft, curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center, the virutal symposium culminated in a roundtable discussion and remarks from keynote speaker, Miwon Kwon, the Walter Hopps Chair in Modern and Contemporary Art, Department of Art History, UCLA.

Join 2020/21 Nasher Prize Laureate Michael Rakowitz as he considers the meanings of places and objects that are a part of his cultural heritage, and their impact on his work as an artist. During this time of social separation, Rakowitz explores the question: “If I can’t be there with you, how can I show you where I am?” The laureate is joined in conversation with Nasher Curator Dr. Catherine Craft.

Moderated by Dr. Nada Shabout, Director of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative (CAMCSI) at the University of North Texas, the digital symposium culminated in a roundtable discussion, with remarks from keynote Speaker Carolyn Christov-Bargargiev, Director of Castello di Rivoli, Italy.

Disembodied Intimacy

2020/21 Nasher Prize Dialogues | Digitally Communicating Art, Caregiving, and Sex

Gathered in October 2020 during a time of isolation around the world, Hauser & Wirth’s Director of Special Projects, Randy Kennedy, moderates presentations by artists Emmanuel Van Der Auwera, Mika Rottenberg, and Jacolby Satterwhite, as well as design critic Alice Rawsthorn. "Disembodied Intimacy: Digitally Communicating Art, Caregiving, and Sex" considered the ways digital technology can enrich or stymie important physical human acts, from the presentation of art to nurturing the sick to the erotic. With a focus on the body, the talk seeks to underscore the physical, phenomenological relationship between people and things so fundamental to the experience of sculpture.

2019 Nasher Prize Dialogues |  Location: Copenhagen

Taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark, one of the design capitals of the world, Nasher Prize Dialogues: Sculpture + Design this panel discussion explored hybrid sculptural forms with artists Nina BeierMartin Boyce, and Michael Elmgreen (Elmgreen & Dragset), and the ways in which each deploy architecture and design within their own artistic practices, from altered readymades to architectural interventions to highly crafted recreations of the built environment. The conversation moderator was Nasher Prize juror, art historian and critic Briony Fer.

The Nasher Sculpture Center in association with The Common Guild presents an event as part of the Nasher Prize Dialogues: Artists & Authorship, a panel discussion considering issues around the idea of artistic licence, and the use / re-use of existent material. The discussion will consider questions around ownership, originality, responsibility, ethics, and authorship in 21st century art production.

2017 Nasher Prize Dialogues | Location: Mexico City

The Public Place of Sculpture considered socially-engaged sculpture in various modes, from social practice outright to objects which employ themes of monument and document. Featuring artists Sanford Biggers, Damián Ortega, Amalia Pica, Pedro Reyes, and panel moderator Pablo León de la Barra, the discussion centered on the historical role sculpture has played in public spaces and the dynamic and evolving ways it is currently presented, especially in light of the global political climate. Presented in partnership with the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo.
