Linda Ridway on Herself

The title of this installation for the Nasher Public is Herself. This work is an assemblage of friends, family, poets, faith and authors of first and last blinds. I have brought all of these actors into my studio to find comfort from the self-isolation of this past year. When I photographed the piece, I realized I had brought a library of thoughts and the artist Robert Rauschenberg into my studio. Being a printmaker—sculptor the arrival of Rauschenberg was not necessarily a surprise.

Linda Ridgway on Collages

I rarely do collages in my art practice, but during the pandemic I found in my files a series of monoprints that I had done several years ago at Flatbed Press. At that time, I felt they were unsuccessful, but a second or even a third look helped me realize there was something to be mined. I completed six collage works with “how did you dare” being a strong representative of this new series, which is in the installation.

Linda Ridgway on Appreciating the Kitchen Table

Through my participation in the Nasher Public installation process, I have found a new surface again: the tabletop. When I was a young artist, the kitchen table was my studio. Many artists will understand a table of one’s own. I would like to thank Catherine Craft and Leigh Arnold for all their insights and help in completing this process. Thank you.

El título de esta instalación para el Nasher Public es Herself. Esta obra es un ensamblaje de amigos, familia, poetas, fe y autores de primeras y últimas persianas. He traído a todos estos actores a mi estudio para encontrar consuelo al auto-aislamiento de este último año. Cuando fotografié la pieza, me di cuenta de que había traído a mi estudio una biblioteca de pensamientos y al artista Robert Rauschenberg. Siendo un grabador-escultor, la llegada de Rauschenberg no fue necesariamente una sorpresa.

Rara vez hago collages en mi actividad artística, pero durante la pandemia encontré en mis archivos una serie de monotipos que había hecho hace varios años en Prensa Plana. En aquel momento, me pareció que no tenían éxito, pero una segunda o incluso tercera mirada me ayudó a darme cuenta de que había algo que extraer. Realicé seis trabajos de collage, siendo "Cómo te atreviste" un fuerte representante de esta nueva serie, que está en la instalación.

Gracias a mi participación en el proceso de instalación del Nasher Public, he vuelto a encontrar una nueva superficie: la mesa. Cuando era una joven artista, la mesa de la cocina era mi estudio. Muchos artistas entenderán el significado de la mesa propia. Me gustaría dar las gracias a Catherine Craft y a Leigh Arnold por todas sus ideas y su ayuda para completar este proceso. Gracias.
